When you start your small business your thoughts and efforts are probably going to be concentrated on producing your goods and services and marketing them to your customers. Software to help you do all of these tasks exists and much of it is affordable.

Some of the tasks for which software is available include: customer management, delivery, reordering, follow up with customers, bookkeeping, taxes, and the continuing need to market your business.

You’ve probably heard about Microsoft’s Office Suite of programs that includes Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and more. These powerful programs are state-of-the-art for word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and presentations. Instead of spending money on MS Office, you could get the same functionality for free from OpenOffice.org.

OpenOffice is also a multiplatform productivity suite that includes a word processor, a spreadsheet program, a presentation manager, and a drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to those of other office suites. OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office. The interface is similar to that of MS Office and like Office includes: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OOo, as it’s known, lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office formats, PDF, HTML, and XML. It can also import files from those formats, as well as WordPerfect and others. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications.

Adobe Reader lets you read and print from any system any document created as an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file, with its original appearance preserved. PDF files are compact and can be shared, viewed, navigated, and printed exactly as the author intended by anyone with Adobe Reader.

PDF ReDirect 2.2.8 is a PDF creation utility that’s free and easy to use. It is pretty basic in what it does which is converting a document into a PDF file. You might want to do this if you are taking one of your word processing files and putting it on your web site to be downloaded by your customers or if you want to send, sell, or give someone a file and have it look exactly the same as you created it.
